Strange: A late Lions-49ers decision by Dan Campbell earns the bettor $70,000.
For one bettor, garbage time is prime time. Jameson Williams, with help from Lions coach Dan Campbell, helped him win a substantial sum of money.
This bettor wagered $100 on a same-game parlay that had Lions player Williams scoring both the game’s first and last touchdowns on Sunday to win a $70,000 profit from DraftKings Sportsbook.
Although he only saw one carries and two catches caught, the Lions’ second-year wide out from Alabama appeared to be as explosive as always.
However, two of those were paid off, and the timing was ideal.
Williams raced through tacklers on his way to a huge touchdown on an early scamper that went for 42 yards. Now the wager was active.
Then, with two minutes remaining and down 10 points, the Lions elected to try for a touchdown rather than attempt a field goal. Williams kept the Lions alive with a touchdown on fourth down.
Coach Dan Campbell’s risky move to go for the score while wasting a timeout was just one of several that had supporters jumping for joy following Detroit’s 34-31 defeat, as The Post’s Mike Vaccaro detailed.
Detroit started its last play of the game, down the field, using all three of its timeouts. The score was 34–24. However, Campbell’s decision to call a timeout on fourth and goal from the three-yard line effectively terminated the game.
On fourth down, the squad should have probably just kicked a field goal rather than going for the score.
The Lions were obliged to accept their poor success percentage of 3.2 percent on onside kicks as a result of Campbell’s choice to use the timeout. What a waste of an analytics man.
ESPN predicts that Hail Marys from around the 50-yard line are completed at a 9.7 percent rate if Detroit had kicked the field goal and forced a stop.
