The Detroit Lions might sign five free agent cornerbacks to take Cameron Sutton’s spot.
Based on the claim, it was inevitable and it happened fast. Cameron Sutton was freed by the Detroit Lions on Thursday after a Florida arrest warrant was filed for him on Wednesday.
After Sutton’s difficult rookie season in 2023, several Lions supporters wanted him gone. With the arrival of Carlton Davis, he was expected to have another opportunity to prove himself the following season, albeit in a less demanding capacity. However, everything suddenly altered due to the seriousness of his alleged off-field violation.
On their cornerback depth chart, the Lions now have a prominent place open, for better or worse. This offseason, Brad Holmes made a determined attempt to solve the team’s largest problem as soon as possible. He signed Amik Robertson and completed a trade for Davis before the second day of free agency began. Though there was still room to add someone, either from the remaining free agents or the draft, the concept now has a little more urgency because Sutton is no longer there.
It is still possible to draft a cornerback, maybe as early as the first round of the draft next month. But these five make a lot of sense, and the Lions ought to be searching for a veteran to add.
The Detroit Lions have five choices for free agent cornerbacks to replace Cameron Sutton.
5. Jackson Adoree
Jackson just finished a difficult 2023 season with the New York Giants, where he moved from the slot to the outside during the season, which negatively impacted his PFF grades (48.6 overall, 45.9 coverage grade). Additionally, he has missed at least three games for the past five seasons.
However, Jackson enjoyed two successful seasons with the Giants before to last year. Taking 2020 out of the picture as a short sample, he appeared in just three games, but in the other five seasons, he had an overall PFF grade of 70 or higher.
Jackson has primarily played outside, but the Lions appreciate his versatility since he can also play in the slot. His value is increased by his return game ability. Playing in the blitz-heavy Giants scheme should help him in the Lions game as well.
