REPORT: Tony Jefferson has Agreed to be on Miami’s radar after coming out of retirement.
The Miami Dolphins are completing their 90-man training camp roster, but there is still time to make changes before practices begin in late July. The Dolphins are slated for a post-June 1 payout of $18.5 million after parting ways with CB Xavien Howard and might use that money to bolster the trenches or add to a top-heavy secondary.
The Dolphins will move up from 30th to 14th in available salary cap space. However, with the team currently $11 million over the 2025 threshold and no franchise quarterback under contract, top-tier free agents such as two-time Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons may be out of Miami’s price range.
Jefferson, 32, stated this week that he is coming out of retirement and intends to play in 2024. The former Oklahoma Sooners safety spent seven seasons in the NFL before retiring on May 25, 2023.
Jefferson had a foot injury in 2022 and played in six games for the 49ers and Ravens in 2021. On December 13, 2021, he was added to Baltimore’s practice squad, during which time Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver served as defensive line coach and run-game coordinator.
It’s worth noting that Jefferson hasn’t played more than six games since 2018. He had a ruptured ACL and did not play in 2020 before joining two practice squads.
However, the Dolphins would not be signing Jefferson.
