Throughout the 2024 offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been linked to every big name quarterback that was supposed to be available.
It gave fans hope that the team’s quarterback position would improve for the upcoming season.It appears that any improvements to the role will have to come from within the business.
According to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers will not pursue Russell Wilson even if the Broncos decide to part ways with the nine-time Pro Bowl player.
“The Steelers are not interested in signing Wilson in the likely event he’s released by the Denver Broncos, a source familiar with the coaching staff’s feelings on the quarterback at this stage of his career told The Athletic.”
The Athletic’s sources also stated that they will not pursue Justin Fields, Kirk Cousins, or Baker Mayfield this offseason.
“Moreover, Pittsburgh is not among the teams actively working to trade for Fields,” league sources told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. According to league sources, Pittsburgh will not pursue Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield in free agency.
If the Steelers miss out on all of these noteworthy quarterbacks, Kenny Pickett will be under center for another year in Pittsburgh.
Pickett’s first two seasons have been unsatisfactory.
Over the past two years, he has only 17 touchdowns in 24 starts and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 1:1 as a thrower.
Still, it appears like the franchise believes he can thrive in the future now that they have hired a stronger offensive coach and will be strengthening the offensive line this offseason.
Arthur Smith had already met with Pickett, and the meeting was reported to go well.
During his press conference at the NFL Combine, the team’s general manager also spoke highly of Pickett.
