Steelers GM addresses the scorching Justin Fields, Kirk Cousins, and Russell Wilson rumors.
When asked if he was trading for Fields, the Steelers’ general manager responded as follows:
KHAN: “I won’t go into detail about the chats we’ve had. But, as I have stated, I feel obligated to pursue every possible path in order to improve our football squad.
REPORTER: What about Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson? And you’ve been running with this on, too.
KHAN: “Yes, the same answer.
REPORTER: “There weren’t any discussions?”
KHAN: “I’m not going to engage in any detailed conversations.
Khan made it clear that he believes in Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett and respects Mason Rudolph’s performance last season. However, his major task is to ensure that the Steelers field the greatest team possible.
“I have an obligation to this organization, to the players, to the front office, and to every member of the Steeler nation, to consider every alternative and method of improving this club. And we’re going to accomplish it,” Kahn stated.
The newest betting odds favor Wilson over incumbent Pickett as the Steelers’ starting quarterback in Week 1 next season. Fields is third in the betting odds.
The Minnesota Vikings quarterback will be a free agent. On March 13, the NFL’s new league year begins. Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell have both stated a desire to keep Cousins in Minnesota next season, but a new contract has yet to be signed.
Several teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, have expressed interest in Cousins’ services. It appears that it is time to include the 49ers. According to Covers.com, the odds of the 49ers acquiring Cousins have shifted dramatically. He was +15000 to sign with the Niners, but now that figure is +1800.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has been quite complimentary of Cousins’ ability over the years, but the Niners have received excellent quarterback play from Brock Purdy each of the last two seasons. Cousins is regarded as an accurate passer and a solid decision maker, but he has had difficulty overcoming great teams throughout his 12-year career.
Kirk Cousins is also coming off a torn Achilles, which forced him to miss more than half of the 2023 season. He appears to be on schedule to start the season without incident, but the veteran quarterback will be 36 years old at the start of the next season.
