The Steelers have appointed Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. That presents a challenge to Kenny Pickett and a chance for Ryan Tannehill.
Smith plays it safe with quarterbacks and leans on the run. He was not brought on to help Pickett grow. Smith will downplay Pickett and attempt to hide his flaws. That won’t be the declared goal. But it is what is going to occur.
Former Steeler Trai Essex came to the conclusion that Smith’s employment represents a recognition of Pickett’s shortcomings.
From 2019 to 2020, Ryan Tannehill was the quarterback for Tennessee while Smith served as the offensive coordinator for the Titans. In 26 starts, Tannehill won 18 games. Only 13 interceptions were made among his 55 touchdown passes. The last statistic is more significant.
This offseason, Tannehill, 35, is a free agent. He is aware of Smith’s expectations and system. It is improbable that teams will target Tannehill with the intention of starting him.
Tannehill should be acquired by the Steelers as a backup quarterback if the deal is fair.
If Tannehill is astute, he will perceive Pickett as a weak-armed, average talent with poor decision-making skills who is prone to making mistakes and losing his job.
