REPORT: QB Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers is worth $444 million in the United States…
The Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin reached a three-year contract extension that will last through the 2024 NFL season, the teams announced on Tuesday. The financial information wasn’t made public right away.
Team president Art Rooney II stated, “I’m happy to announce that Mike Tomlin’s contract has been extended through the 2024 season.” “Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we work to win another championship.”
The Steelers hired Tomlin in 2007, and since then, he has led the team to a 145-78-1 regular-season record (.650 winning percentage) and the 2008 Super Bowl XLIII championship.
“I am extremely grateful for this contract extension and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 14 seasons,” Tomlin stated. “We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about this upcoming season.”
The organization’s history of tenured head coaches has been carried on by the 49-year-old native of Virginia.
Four Super Bowl championships were won by the Steelers under Chuck Noll’s leadership from 1969 to 1991. The Super Bowl XL title was added to the team’s trophy cabinet when Bill Cowher took over in 1992 and remained in that role until 2006. After Tomlin, there were just three head coaches for the team in fifty-two years.
In the current era, that kind of consistency in the head coaching position is practically unheard of, and Tomlin’s opening 14 seasons without a losing record have cemented his position for the foreseeable future. During that time, he has nine seasons with double-digit victories.
After Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints (2006) and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots (hired in 2000), he has the third-longest tenure of any NFL head coach.
Before joining the Steelers, Tomlin worked as an assistant for 12 years, both in college and in the NFL. He was also a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ January 2003 Super Bowl winning squad.
With Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback, approaching 39 years old, the Steelers may be in for a period of transition in the near future. He and the organization restructured his contract to a one-year, $14 million deal, and he is expected to become a free agency following the 2021 season.
The decision by ownership and the front office to extend Tomlin’s contract shows their faith in him to guide the team through the probable transition to a new quarterback.
