GREEN BAY, WIS. – The mother of Green Bay Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was killed in a car accident the same day the football player became a father.
Bola Gbaja-Biamila, 53, was killed Sunday night in Los Angeles when her car went out of control and struck a palm tree, then caught fire.
“She’s going to be dearly missed,” Gbaja-Biamila said from the family’s home in south-central Los Angeles on Wednesday. “She was always trying to help somebody and that’s what she was doing just before she died.”
The accident occurred the same day Gbaja-Biamila’s wife, Eileen, gave birth to the couple’s first child in Green Bay, 10 hours before her husband played against the Chicago Bears.
The Arizona Supreme Court has cleared the way for construction work to begin in earnest on the Arizona Cardinals’ new stadium.
The Supreme Court without comment denied a petition for review of an Aug. 27 decision in which a Court of Appeals panel ruled that the law that created the TSA was constitutional. The decision upheld a lower court’s ruling from November 2001.
Receiver Herman Moore announced his retirement Wednesday, knowing he had little chance of playing for the New York Giants and that the injury-riddled team needed roster space.
The retirement comes less than a month after the Giants (6-6) signed the Detroit Lions’ leading career receiver to help a pass-catching corps that lost Ike Hilliard and rookie Tim Carter in a span of three weeks.
St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk could make his first start in four weeks Sunday at Kansas City.
Faulk played as a reserve last week after missing two games with a high sprain on his right ankle, and he ran nine times for 29 yards. Coach Mike Martz said Wednesday that Faulk was “no worse for the wear.”
Offensive tackle Orlando Pace might miss the rest of the season with what the team called a “significant hamstring tear.”
Denver Broncos quarterback Brian Griese and tight Shannon Sharpe have declared themselves ready to play Sunday against the New York Jets.
Griese didn’t have much trouble moving around on his sprained left knee during practice Wednesday, while Sharpe tested his partially dislocated right elbow in blocking situations for the first time.
The Washington Redskins placed punter Bryan Barker and defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson on injured reserve Wednesday, officially ending their seasons.
Both were injured in the Thanksgiving loss at Dallas. Barker had reconstructive surgery on his nose after getting hit while trying to recover a blocked field goal, and Wilkinson partially tore his right calf muscle.
Green Bay Packers tackle Chad Clifton was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending a season in which he was hurt on a blindside hit by Warren Sapp and faces a long recovery.
Clifton has yet to walk since the pelvis injury Nov. 24 against Tampa Bay and might need surgery next month.
