The New York Giants and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale parted ways on Monday, and while the details are not yet formal, it is expected that they will be worked out behind the scenes.
Wink’s resignation effectively forfeits his salary for the 2024 season, which is presumably why the Giants attempted to push him out by firing his right hand man, outside linebacker coach Drew Wilkins.
However, the organization is currently looking for a new DC, and according to Hondo Carpenter of SI, if Antonio Pierce does not secure the head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Giants may be interested in hiring him.
The Giants Are Certainly Considering Pierce took over the Raiders after Josh McDaniels’ firing and led them to a couple wins, including a victory over the Giants.
Big Blue lost 30-6 and had just 154 passing yards, but the Raiders allowed 125 rushing yards and 209 passing yards.
But it was Las Vegas’ defense that put on an absolute show, holding the Giants in check and giving the offense great field position.
Pierce took over immediately and provided much-needed leadership ability for the Giants, who had undergone a change in their coaching staff.
Pierce is a former Super Bowl-winning linebacker and one of the best defenders in Giants history, so a reunion with him could be ideal.
Pierce has been the Raiders’ linebackers coach since 2022, so he is inexperienced, but he is a leader among the men and has a wealth of experience from his playing days.
Pierce’s inexperience required the support of assistants, but his ability to rally his troops and build camaraderie was a unique attribute.
Of course, the Giants could use a more experienced coach at this point, but Pierce could be a rising star and bring a unique perspective to his system.
But Pierce is also a great guy, and the Giants just fired coach Martindale, who was outspoken about their cause, so Brian Daboll may want to target a coach who just plays by the rules.
