However, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler speculates that Johnson is not part of Pittsburgh’s long-term plans.
In light of the recent controversy surrounding the 27-year-old receiver, Brugler believes the Steelers will draft LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.
in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft in place of Johnson.
I expect that it will be considered.
“Given Diontae Johnson’s situation, his time in Pittsburgh may be limited,” Brugler wrote.
“The Steelers have the best track record of drafting receivers outside of the first round, but with his outstanding size (6-4, 205), speed, and tracking ability, Thomas will be tough to pass on.

The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo laid out both the pros and cons of this idea.
At the very least, DeFabo predicted that “off-the-field situations” will influence the decisions the Steelers make at receiver and the NFL Draft overall.
“These off-field circumstances must be considered in the decision-making process, just as on-field success,” DeFabo wrote.
“Probably from a team-building standpoint, the better option would be to move on from one of the two (receivers) this offseason and use a first-round draft pick instead.
