After benching Russell Wilson, the Denver Broncos should be looking for a new quarterback. Head coach Sean Payton will most likely break ways with Wilson this offseason and go with his preferred starting quarterback.
Denver has the 14th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft heading into Week 18 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Will Payton be able to choose a “ideal option” as quarterback to replace Wilson?
Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema evaluated perfect 2024 NFL Draft candidates for all 32 teams and declared Oregon star Bo Nix a fit for the Broncos.
The Broncos need a new quarterback now that Russell Wilson is on the bench and on his way out of Denver. The issue is that I can’t put Caleb Williams or Drake Maye here knowing how much it would cost to move up that far in the draft. Nix would be an excellent choice if they stay in the middle of the first round, where they are expected to choose. Nix possesses legitimate NFL arm strength in both distance and velocity, as well as increased leg mobility. He’s also the most experienced collegiate quarterback of all time, having started 60 games. “He and Sean Payton could complement each other well,” Sikkema said in his January 2 essay.
Bo Nix Delivered an Outstanding Second Act As a member of the Oregon Ducks
Nix did not immediately become a superstar because his college career was at a crossroads following the 2021 season. The quarterback desired a change after posting a 21-13 record in 34 games with the Auburn Tigers over three seasons.
Nix transferred to the University of Oregon prior to the 2022 collegiate football season. The switch instantly paid off, as the Ducks went 10-3 while tossing for 3,594 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Nix’s final season with Oregon in 2023 was a spectacle in and of itself.
As the Ducks went 12-2, Nix passed for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns with only three interceptions. In his final collegiate game against the severely outmatched Liberty Flames, the star tied a Fiesta Bowl record by tossing five touchdowns.
