Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has come under fire in recent weeks as the team enters the final stages of the regular season and looks increasingly likely to be Tomlin’s first losing season.
However, despite the Steelers’ struggles this season and lack of playoff success in recent years, ownership has no intention of replacing the head coach.
In fact, they plan to keep Tomlin long-term.
“There’s a lot of noise outside.
Inside, it’s business as usual,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio said on NBC’s pregame show before the Steelers-Bengals kickoff.
“They don’t seem to want to make any coaching changes.
There’s no reason to believe Tomlin wants to leave.
They actually want to extend his contract, which runs through 2024, before the start of next season.
He is already involved in the team’s plans for this year and next.
If the Steelers lose two more games, it will be Tomlin’s first loss as head coach of the season.
He hit .
500 three times and won 10 or more games in nine of his 17 years as manager.
Tomlin led the Steelers to his sixth Super Bowl victory in his second year as head coach in 2008.
He ranks first in franchise history in wins and third in total playoff wins.
However, the 2023 season, which started with preseason optimism, ended badly, even though the Steelers entered Week 15 with a 7-7 record and still had a chance to make the playoffs.
It became a disaster.
The Steelers appear to be without a playoff win for the eighth year in a row, but poor offensive play and increasingly concerning penalty issues have resulted in ugly losses to worse teams on the field.
Star receiver George Pickens has had some off-field issues, and former players are wondering if the Steelers tradition still exists.
All of this combined to make Tomlin’s seat warm, but apparently not warm enough for the front office to move.
