Before the Manchester City vs. Liverpool Premier League match began, the first banner to fly over the Etihad Stadium was one demanding the release of Ahmed Mansoor, a well-known activist in the United Arab Emirates.
Two banners flew over the Etihad Stadium during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Liverpool, each for a different purpose.
Mansoor was given a ten-year prison sentence for criticizing the leadership of the United Arab Emirates. The human rights organization Amnesty International was the driving force behind the campaign to free him.
When he joined four other activists in 2011 to demand political or economic reforms from the state, he began to anger the UAE. 2018 saw his sentencing after his arrest in 2017.
The second banner that was flown over the Etihad Stadium expressed opposition to Everton receiving a ten-point deduction for breaking the league’s financial fairness rules.
Everton’s supporters, who have maintained that the team did not violate any financial restrictions, overwhelmingly feel that the Premier League should not punish them.
Rather than Everton, they feel that Manchester City, who have been hit with over 115 accusations for failing to comply with financial regulations, should have faced punishment long ago.
Because of this, Everton supporters earlier today floated a banner that said, “Premier League = corrupt,” above the Etihad Stadium.
As of this writing, the Premier League has not released an official statement regarding the two banners that were flown over the Manchester Stadium.
