The Vatican has confirmed that the funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s 0Square, Vatican City. This announcement follows the pontiff’s passing on April 21 at the age of 88 due to complications from a cerebral stroke and other health issues.
A Humble Farewell
In line with his lifelong commitment to simplicity and humility, Pope Francis had previously reformed the papal funeral rites. These changes include the use of a single, zinc-lined wooden coffin instead of the traditional triple-layered casket, and the elimination of elaborate ceremonial elements. Notably, he chose to be buried outside the Vatican, in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, making him the first pope since Leo XIII to be interred there.
Public Viewing and Mourning
Pope Francis’s body currently lies in an open casket at St. Peter’s Basilica, where it will remain until Friday evening. The Vatican has extended visiting hours to accommodate the thousands of mourners who have come to pay their respects. A traditional nine-day mourning period, known as the Novendiali, has commenced, with Masses and prayers being held in his honor.
Global Tributes
The funeral is expected to be attended by numerous dignitaries and world leaders. Among those confirmed to attend are former U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, as well as Prince William, who will represent the British royal family in the absence of King Charles. These tributes reflect the global impact of Pope Francis’s leadership and the widespread admiration for his efforts to modernize the Church and advocate for the marginalized.
A Legacy of Reform
Pope Francis’s tenure was marked by significant reforms aimed at simplifying Church practices and emphasizing pastoral care. His decisions regarding his funeral and burial reflect his desire to be remembered not as a figure of grandeur, but as a humble servant of faith. As the Catholic Church prepares to bid farewell to this transformative leader, the world reflects on his enduring legacy of compassion, reform, and dedication to the teachings of Christ.
