Auburn, AL – Emotions ran high as Auburn Tigers women’s basketball head coach Larry Vickers didn’t hold back following the team’s recent performance, publicly expressing his disappointment in what he described as a “lack of urgency, focus, and execution” during a post-game press conference.
The Tigers, who have shown promise throughout the season, fell short in a crucial matchup that could have bolstered their postseason hopes. Vickers, who took the reins of the program with a mission to rebuild and elevate the team’s competitiveness in the SEC, made it clear that he expects more from his players—not just in terms of results, but in effort and accountability.
“This isn’t just about wins and losses,” Vickers said. “It’s about how we represent ourselves on the court, how we respond to adversity, and how we fight for every possession. Tonight, we didn’t do that, and that’s unacceptable.”
Vickers highlighted several key issues that contributed to the team’s struggles, including a lack of defensive intensity, poor shot selection, and a failure to execute basic fundamentals. Turnovers plagued the Tigers, and second-chance points given up to the opposition proved costly.
“We’re not communicating on defense, we’re forcing shots instead of moving the ball, and our transition defense is breaking down,” Vickers added. “Those are things we drill every day in practice. There’s no excuse for us to be this disconnected at this point in the season.”
This isn’t the first time Vickers has been candid about his team’s performance, but his tone suggested deeper frustration—a coach who knows his team is capable of much more. He emphasized that talent alone isn’t enough to compete in a conference as tough as the SEC. Grit, discipline, and heart, he said, are what separate the good teams from the great ones.
While Vickers didn’t call out any players by name, his message was clear: the team must take a hard look in the mirror. He also took responsibility as a coach, acknowledging that leadership starts with him. However, he made it equally clear that the players must buy in and hold each other accountable if they want to finish the season strong.
“We have a choice,” Vickers said. “We can let this moment define us, or we can respond. We’ll find out what kind of team we really are.”
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Tigers bounce back. With several important games still on the schedule, the opportunity for redemption is there—but only if the team can rise to the challenge.
For now, the message from Coach Vickers is loud and clear: the standard at Auburn is higher, and anything less than full commi
tment won’t cut it.
