Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Head Coach Niele Ivey Named National Coach …

South Bend, IN — April 15, 2025 — Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey has been named the National Coach of the Year, a prestigious honor recognizing her outstanding leadership, success on the court, and lasting impact on the game. The award comes after a remarkable season that saw the Fighting Irish rise to national prominence, dominating the ACC and making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

This recognition solidifies Ivey’s reputation as one of the brightest coaching minds in college basketball today and marks a significant milestone in her coaching career.

A Season of Excellence

Under Ivey’s guidance, Notre Dame posted one of its best records in recent years, finishing the regular season with a 30–4 record and claiming the ACC Championship title. The team also reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, falling just short of a Final Four appearance in a hard-fought game that captured national attention.

Ivey’s ability to develop young talent, foster team chemistry, and maintain a high standard of excellence was evident throughout the season. Her team consistently ranked in the Top 10 of national polls, and players credited her for instilling confidence, discipline, and a championship mindset.

“This award isn’t just about me,” Ivey said during a press conference on Monday. “It’s about our entire program—my incredible staff, our dedicated players, and the support of the Notre Dame community. We achieved something special together this year, and I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition on their behalf.”

A Trailblazer in the Game

Niele Ivey, a former Notre Dame standout player and assistant coach, took over the program in 2020 following the retirement of legendary coach Muffet McGraw. Since then, she has quickly made her mark, blending her experience as a player, her tenure in the WNBA, and her time as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA into a unique and effective coaching style.

She became only the second Black woman to lead a Power Five program to an Elite Eight appearance and continues to be a role model for young women in sports, particularly women of color aspiring to break into leadership roles.

“She’s not just coaching a team—she’s changing the game,” said Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick. “Niele has elevated our women’s basketball program to new heights while staying true to who she is. She leads with integrity, passion, and a deep commitment to the growth of her players both on and off the court.”

Player Development and Culture

One of Ivey’s greatest strengths is her ability to develop players. Under her leadership, multiple Notre Dame players earned All-American honors this season, with standout performances from guards Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo drawing national attention. Both players have credited Ivey with helping them take their game to the next level, praising her basketball IQ, her encouragement, and the way she empowers her team.

“I’ve never had a coach who believes in us the way Coach Ivey does,” said Hidalgo. “She challenges us to be our best every day, but she also makes us feel seen, valued, and capable of greatness.”

Ivey also emphasizes a strong team culture, focusing on trust, communication, and unity. The team’s bond was often visible in their on-court chemistry and resilience in tough matchups.

Looking Ahead

With a strong core of returning players and one of the top recruiting classes in the country, the future looks bright for Notre Dame women’s basketball. Ivey is determined to build on this year’s success and bring a national title back to South Bend.

“We’re just getting started,” Ivey said. “This group has shown what’s possible when you believe in each other and commit to a common goal. I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

The National Coach of the Year award is just the latest in a growing list of accolades for Ivey, who has quickly proven herself not only as a worthy successor to McGraw but as a coaching powerhouse in her own right. As Notre Dame continues to thrive under her leadership, the basketball world is taking notice—and the Fighting Irish faithful are dreaming big.
