Former Detroit Lions defensive end Charles Harris, who led the team in sacks in 2021, is planning to sign with the Carolina Panthers. The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Harris joins the Panthers after three seasons in Detroit, where he played in 36 games (21 starts) and recorded 92 tackles, 10 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Harris’ standout season came in 2021, his first year with the Lions, when he posted a career-high 65 tackles, 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles over 17 games (14 starts). His performance earned him a two-year, $14 million contract extension. However, a groin injury sidelined Harris for much of 2022, limiting him to just six games. Ahead of the 2023 season, he restructured his contract, accepting a $3 million pay cut to stay in Detroit.
After his contract expired in 2023, the Lions chose not to re-sign him, likely focusing on the development of younger players like Josh Paschal and James Houston. The team also signed former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Marcus Davenport, signaling Harris’ departure.
On Aug. 30, reports surfaced that the Panthers were exploring options to bolster their pass rush, with Harris working out for the team the day prior.
In addition to his time in Detroit, Harris has had stints with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins, who selected him 22nd overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
